The Flammables Industry had grown more frantic in its effort to squeeze the last pennies out of the 18th century — smearing fact into fiction, denying the obvious, and doubling down on a losing hand.

But as the world burned, resistance was spreading.

The people stood with science and science stood with the people against the sooty machine relentlessly deleting from the planet everything wild and living. 

The Monopolists had pawned the very thing we loved most about ourselves: our effervescent delusion of infinite betterment.

The original spark of light that inspired us to defy the odds and to believe in spectacular, last-minute turnarounds.

Somehow our giddy, unstoppable faith in the future had become just another way of saying, "surely someone will deal with it."

Yep, that’s what almost got us in the end.
